I wrote this poem for my first grandson’s first birthday.  It was such a wonderful celebration, Lafayette Park in San Francisco a Cinco de Mayo themed birthday party, pre pandemic.  Lots of friends and family, the youngest joy of our life. Happy Birthday to my littlest love.

One tiny strapping guy
stole my heart,
that perfect baby skin,
such soft fluffy cheeks
the best to kiss on this
entire earth.
A twinkling eye,
a kick, a squeal of joy,
An “Oh”, a smile
a giggle, a first word,
yelling Nana-Nana-Nana
loudly and repeatedly makes
me smile.
You are so loved and
wanted, not sure if
any other child was ever so
worshipped and loved.
Cuddly, busy with toys,
and unpacking cabinets.
Love your food, first
a messy avocado and graduating
to clam chowder and brussel
sprouts, my little fellow foodie.
scooting along the floor,
sitting playing, so many
things to learn and even
standing up…new words.
talking sessions with
your Nana and Pop
and Aunt Jenny,
A sly smile, a questioning
look, a gaze that checks it
all out, really wanting to
understand this new world
you have lived in only a year
so far.
Our little genius.
There is a joy to it all
that I can’t describe,
this all encompassing love
as I hold him, talk back
and forth and kiss that
soft, sweet baby face.
I just stare at his beauty
and newness and joy in life.
I am your Nana
and forever in love.
My little Mason, so lucky
to have you in my life,
my love, my future, my
promise of generations to
come.  My perfect grandson.
Happy first birthday,
as I watch your grow
I promise to love you, forever and ever.

Your biggest fan, Nana (AKA Jewel Roberts)   5-1-2019
